How to Calculate Army Body Fat
The Army Body Fat Calculator is a method used by the U.S. Army to assess whether service members meet body composition standards. Unlike simple weight-based measurements, this calculation accounts for body fat percentage, which provides a more accurate picture of a person’s fitness and health status.
Purpose and Military Use
The U.S. Army uses body fat percentage calculations as part of its physical fitness and health readiness standards. If a soldier exceeds the maximum allowable weight for their height (as defined in Army Regulation 600-9), they must undergo a body fat assessment. This helps ensure that service members maintain the physical condition necessary for military duties while accounting for the fact that muscle weighs more than fat.
The body fat standards vary by age and gender, recognizing physiological differences. This assessment helps determine:
- Whether a soldier meets enlistment or retention standards
- Eligibility for certain military occupational specialties
- Overall readiness and fitness levels
The Formula
The U.S. Army uses different formulas for men and women, based on specific body circumference measurements:
For Men:
Body Fat % = 86.010 × log₁₀(abdomen – neck) – 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76
For Women:
Body Fat % = 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip – neck) – 97.684 × log₁₀(height) – 78.387
Variables Explained:
- Abdomen/Waist: Measured at the navel level (horizontal measurement)
- Neck: Measured below the larynx (Adam’s apple), at the smallest circumference
- Hip (women only): Measured at the largest protrusion of the buttocks
- Height: Total standing height
- All measurements: Typically in inches for the U.S. Army formula
Important Measurement Tips:
- Keep the tape measure level and snug but not compressing the skin
- Measure on bare skin when possible
- Take multiple measurements and use the average
- Round to the nearest half-inch
Example Calculation
Male Soldier Example:
- Height: 70 inches (5’10”)
- Neck: 15 inches
- Abdomen: 32 inches
Step 1: Calculate (abdomen – neck)
- 32 – 15 = 17 inches
Step 2: Calculate log₁₀ values
- log₁₀(17) = 1.2304
- log₁₀(70) = 1.8451
Step 3: Apply the formula
- Body Fat % = 86.010 × 1.2304 – 70.041 × 1.8451 + 36.76
- Body Fat % = 105.83 – 129.25 + 36.76
- Body Fat % = 13.34%
This soldier would meet Army standards, as the maximum allowable body fat for males typically ranges from 20-26% depending on age group.
Female Soldier Example:
- Height: 65 inches (5’5″)
- Neck: 13 inches
- Waist: 28 inches
- Hip: 38 inches
Step 1: Calculate (waist + hip – neck)
- 28 + 38 – 13 = 53 inches
Step 2: Calculate log₁₀ values
- log₁₀(53) = 1.7243
- log₁₀(65) = 1.8129
Step 3: Apply the formula
- Body Fat % = 163.205 × 1.7243 – 97.684 × 1.8129 – 78.387
- Body Fat % = 281.41 – 177.09 – 78.387
- Body Fat % = 25.93%
This female soldier would meet Army standards, as the maximum allowable body fat for women typically ranges from 30-36% depending on age group.
